Default Anyone Turn Off Overdrive in Traffic?... And...

Just wondering... Also, apart from the higher RPM's and a little extra "oomph," does keeping it always off affect the transmission (or anything else)at all? And one more thing, when launching... if it is on... am I losing that much more than if I turned it off? Thanks. :-) (FYI: I havea CAI, cat backs, and atune).

Overdrive??? That must be an AUTOMATIC thing... [sm=burnout.gif]

On my automatic tranny on my SUV, I usually will turn the OD off only when I need a little engine braking such as to keep from picking up too much speed going downhill, going into a curve where I don't want to be on the brakesor coasting to a stoplight. If I'm in stop-and-go traffic thatgets up to speeds where I keep shifting into and out of OD, I'll turn it off.

I keep mine off unless I'm going over 60.

It really doesn't make a difference during a launch, it only makes a difference when you are in higher gears. I turn of overdrive if I want to fly by someone on the freeway. Turning it off at those speed will increase the rpms by a couple g's and help you accelerate faster.

I keep O/D off in town traffic and driving in the mountains. I've done this for many years. Never caused a transmission problem or any other problem. When I'm driving over 45 or 50 I'll put it in overdrive.

Everytime I start my car, I turn off the OD and the TCS ..

I don't like how the car pulls in 5th gear, and I don't go past 55 anyway in the city.
But my mpg suffers a lot. I get 13 if i'm lucky.

The problem is (60mph in 5th gear + Borla Stingers = Drooooone!!) That's why I stay in 4th.

Almost exactly what I do in the 06 Escape auto my wife has. The stang is a manual.

I always wondered about this too. I remember when GM came out with their OD trans. in the 80's and had big problems with the tranny burning up because they were shifting back and forth at slower speeds. Any chance this could happen with our cars?
