Rims and Tires

Rims and Tires
I decided I wanna put together a bad *** rim/tire package with slightly bigger deep dishes in the back and the standard size up front. To do this I need to understand how tires work and sadly I do not... haha
How do I match up rims with tires? Like I see a set of rims that I like and the first measurement is diamater I am guessing i.e. 17x8 and the second number is the width of the rim sideways? Ok so asuming I am right there what does 235/55 in the tire size mean? I did alot of wiki research and found out some info but its very confusing if you dont know 80% of the terminology they are using to describe it.
If someone could give me a short "Tires'n'Rims for Dummies" class I would apriciate it.
Thnx,
James

RE: Rims and Tires
Try looking at these links. They explain offset and backspacing.
235/55 means the tire is 235 mm wide, and the sidewall height is 55% of 235 mm. By the way, there are about 25.4 mm in 1 inch.
You can do the calculations to determine what tire/rim sizes will match stock height. Here's a sample... 235/55/17 = 255/45/18 = 285/40/18. I am running 255/45/18 up front (stock height) and 295/45/18 out back (slightly taller than stock...about 1.3 inches).

RE: Rims and Tires
I just read the 2 links and think that I might go with 275/40/18 (rim width = 9") up front and 315/30/18 (rim width = 10.5") out back.
Is that feasable? I think it sounds good on paper but lemme know if I am off my rocker and all.

RE: Rims and Tires
305/35/18 sounds like an expensive tire. Also make sure your rear is on center so you don't have to worry about tire rub in the rear. The 275/40/18 is a smaller diameter in the front so the wheel gap will be larger.
