Well ... I can say that original Mustangs were either 6's or 8's .... The GT was an optional package that included a V8 ...

Ford did offer this option up until the S197 .... LX could be had in a V6 or V8 ... GT was strictly a V8 ....

Yeah, it was a legit question. My Dad asked me whether I bought a V6 or a V8 after I told him I had bought a GT. Not everyone knows the difference, but they should.

And I always thought the GT meant "gets tang" but what do I know?

Always two there are...no more...no less.
That is not true. Back in the day it used to more confusing. The Fox body LX could have been a 4cyl or V8 with the GT being V8 only. But now its super simple. GT = V8 and V6 gets no name.

I like to think of GT standing as Greater Than (Everything)

In 1982 Ford brought back the Boss with a 5.0 Engine and with that they called the car the Mustang GT.
I owned one up until 4 years ago when a car collector bought it from me. Sometimes I wished I kept it....even though it didn't put out as much hp as my V6! That's right....a V6 today has more horsepower and gets no respect even though it can out run the latest Thunderbirds boasting their V8 engines as well as some of the Mustang V8s in the past.So be careful when you try to diss the V6 and catorigized it in the same class as the V6s from years ago.
