Have any of you Guys installed data logging systems in your rides? Will be interested to hearabout your experiences and specifically the positions you chose to install them.
Thanks

I use the Innovate LM-1 along with the LMA-3 AuxBox and 3 XD-16 gauges to display 3 of the channels. I have the 3 gauges mounted on the dash, currently in a CDC pod, soon to be an SoS pod. The LM-1 is under the passenger's seat and the LMA-3 under the dash on the passenger's side. I have all the wires under the carpet and the output to the computer is coiled up in the glove compartment. To start and stop recording, all I do is hit the record button on the gauge. Later, when I'm done, I just hook up the laptop and download all of the logs. Works very well. I like the way I can choose which channel I want to display on the gauge and change it if desired.

I've had this setup for a long time. If I were to buy a new system today, I would go with the DL-32 and the LC-1 rather than the LM-1 and LMA-3. -Joe

Well people use data logging for different things. Mainly though people use it in racing to monitor speeds and lap timing. Loggers with GPS record position and you can build a map of route travelledon the PC.
Some people just use them to track the activities of the car, great for when you lety the kids borrow the 'stang (Like that's ever gonna happen).

I want it to gather data for overlaying onto video taken in the car, Speed/PRM/G-Force/Route travelledetc

I use an MSD Dashhawk for that. It's a great thing.

MSD DashHawk
If you buy one be sure its software version 2 and not software version 1.
The first ones out on the market were lacking in features but the newest
one available, version 2 is mucho bettero. Beware of sellers who want
to sell theirs as it is probably a version 1. see above advertising post

The Dash hawk is a very nice thing to have for realtime monitoring of parameters. The problem with the data stream is that it doesn't have a time stamp in the frame thoughwhich means you can't sync it to, for example, a video source.
If it was a constant data rate you could still manage it without the time code, but the data rate varies according to the parameters you select to record.

I can heartily recommend the Dashhawk as a monitoring tool, 100%. Finding a good place to mount it wasn't too hard, it sits on the dash top to the left of the wheel, in the corner there next to the A-post.I tried a few places including on the top of the steering wheel cowling but it blocked the view of other dials and isn't in normal peripheral view.

Anyway, my original question was an attemptto glean some tips on installation, locality, cabling etc.Don't know whether to stick it in the trunk, under the seat or wherever.... I got one of these which I'm testing in my truck right now

It's going to be perfect for my needs, just a case of installing it nicely.
