Default am i gonna be scammed?

hey guys,
im in the process of buying some gears. i wont name the guy yet because im not sure on this. but in order for me to ship paymentto the states i have to have a phone number to give the shipping company. i used 411.com to look it up. the guy said he is in jacksonville, NC. but the phone number is in bridgeview, IL. also, when i looked up his name andzip code it didnt come up with anything. i'm not used to the way american things work. is it possible that he is legit even though he doesnt show up in the phone book, his zip code doesnt work with his name, and his phone # is in a different state? i wanted to ask here because he could gimme any bull answer and i wouldnt know if its true or not because im from canada and dunno how it works down there.

Your post is kind of vague so I can not speak intelligently about this but I always go by the adage that if things smell like a rat and looks like a rat, then it must be a rat! There are many companies here in the US that incorporate in one state, and have primary offices or warehouses in other states so this could be plausible for the person you are dealing with. Try to go to the USPS website and see if you get an answer on the zip code search. Be sure to do due diligence in checking out the company prior to purchasing because there are a lot of fraudsters on the internet and being out of country, you area prime target as you will have little recourse. Good luck and I hope this helps you.

I agree with the post above me, if it looks questionable, then I dont know if I would do it. Is it a company you are buying from or a private sale? If its a company I would go for it, but if its a private guy I would probably forget it and look elsewhere because things dont add up. Good luck.

Like I said before, check with the USPS on the zip code issue and then try zabasearch.com to look the person up. Zabasearch gives you free information and normally goes back several years on the name and addresses of someone. You can search via name and location or suspected location, that may give you a definitive address also. If things check out then I may feel pretty comfortable making the purchase, but try not to send more money than you could afford to lose in case it is a rip-off.

Slightly off topic, but you MAY want to research people's opinions of Motive gears too.....

honestly you are not given us to go on.....there are many reasons why the shipping state and payment state are not the same......are you using paypal to pay...that is the safest way to do this?

It could be legit because you are describing the exact situation that I am in business wise. In america most people don't like to put themselves in the phone book, and because long distances charges are cheep, they don't have to switch numbers when moving, this usually won't bug them for a year or two.

Still I wouldn't do business myself under those circumstances, I would use a more public normal number.

Yah with the invention of the internet based phone you could sign up for a phone number with a Wall Street area code and operate out of downtown Grande Prairie, AB and no one would know the difference.......but I wouldn't assume anything. I think you have every right to ask why this is the case and then proceed from there. Glad to hear you are using caution.

looks like this may be a chance that you will have to take OR just buy some new gears from a dealer
