OK, so last year I bought 2 Michelin X-Ice snow tires for my rear wheels on my 06 GT 5spd. I only have 1 set of wheels though, so every spring/winter I have to have my rear tires remounted and rebalanced and swapped. No big deal, right?
Well lately it's been snowing a hell of a lot in Chicago, so I absolutely had to get my summer tires off and my snow tires on ASAP. I almost got stuck in a FLAT parking lot the other day with 1" of snow. Yeah...the Mustang is THAT bad on unplowed snow. I had to turn TCS and spin the wheels until I finally got moving.
Anyway, I went to 4 tires stores yesterday, prices ranged from $30 to $100 to mount and balance 2 tires when I supplied them. Ripoff! Eventually I went to Pepboys and they charged me $40 and took an hour to do it. OK, fine, whatever. As soon as I'm done, I start driving, and my car is not driving right. I pull over, and the idiots mounted my DIRECTIONAL SNOW TIRES on the wrong side! Not only that, they didn't balance them right. ARGH. So I went back and had them redo it for free. Total time lost: 4 hours!!!
Why is it that only idiots and morons work at Pepboys, Jiffy Lube, etc.? What happened to knowledgeable mechanics who know how to mount and balance tires?! God, this world has gone to hell, when I don't trust ANY SHOP to even do something as brainless as swap 2 tires.

RE: Pepboys sucks.
1) You don't need no stinking snow tires - the stock Pirellis will work fine. See the thread about Stock Pirellis sucking in the rain, and how it's never the tires, but the driver. If you believe that, though, I've got oceanfront property in Phoenix that's going up for sale.
2) Pepboys caters pretty much to the little old ladies who don't know any better, or the ricer crowd looking for that little bit o' bling to hang off of the monster wing on the back (that, or they sell stickers of Calvin peeing on whatever brand of truck you hate this week). Although, putting snow tires on a car and balancing them should be something most grease monkeys can do, you obviously got the grease monkey who was trained as a Trunk Monkey and never learned the proper way to mount and balance tires.

RE: Pepboys sucks.
About 8 years ago I had a second job at a Pep Boys (worst job ever, but I had bills to pay), anyway they would give a 35% discount on labor, so it was hard to pass up. Unfortunately, like you I found that everything they did needed to be done twice to get it right. The final straw was when I had them do an alignment on my car (88 Escort GT). Long story short, I drove the car to find it had a wiggle when breaking from higher speeds. I looked underneath, and found they forgot to tighten the locking bolt for the rear tierod. It fell off in my hand. I had to work that night, so when I went in I spoke to the service manager and told him of the problem. His response? Don't let that guy work on your car again. I got pretty pissed, and standing there in my Pep Boys uniform I argued with the service manager in front of customers and demanded my money back. I got it back, and from that moment on I have never taken any vehicle I own to them for service. I'd be nervous letting them put air in my tires. Like many other's have said, you get what you pay for. Pep Boys is cheap for a reason.

my last oil change from them took over 3 hours, and they said they checked my fluids. I went home checked my fluids, power steering was low. I went back and got my money back. The service manager didn't even argue, he said give the man his money back. lol Last time I go there for service.
