When "Posers" were cool

RE: When "Posers" were cool
"Racing in the Streets"
My first car was a 1970 Nova that I bought for $800. My boyfriend was a "motor head" at the time. He owned a 1974 Pontiac Firebird and that car was sweet! That big block was bored, stroked w/4bbl, crager rims/Mt's, cherping second was unavoidable. Anyway, he raced locals for money on the weekends and would take my car (327) and lure unsuspecting victims. I can beat you with my girlfriends car, yadda yadda. We called that sleeper Nova the Camaro killer.
Those were the days, bondo parties w/pizza and beer in the garage.

My fave was my best friend's car. It was a boat.....70 Torino...only badge was a GT. What people learned was that the power plant under the hood was a 429. LOL....it had a bench seat and Hurst 4 spd. Wow, did we ever surprise some people with that beast. The only problem was that he could hardly run from the line due to wheel spin, but from a roll I only saw him lose once

Here's one of the few pics i have of my old muscle cars. 66 Chevelle SS396, it had a built 454 w 4.56 gears, i don't think it was much of a sleeper-the roll bar kind of gave it away

I think my dad might have had one of the best sleepers. He had a 66 Dodge Coronet 440 Hemi. For you non-mopar people, the 440 wasn't the engine size it was the body type. There was the 440 and the 500, the 440 was the plain jane version. 66 Was the first year for the street hemi so people didn't really know what it was. It did have Hemi badges on it but they were very small.

I was around back in the day.We would always leave the original badges on. My '65 chevelle
had 283 badges, but I had a 350 bored .30 over, cam,headers, hi-rise and a holly 650 dbl pumper, 2500 B&M stall. My 1st car was was the '69 Firebird in 1978, I was 18...it was slow.
The '65 was my 2nd car, I was 19-20. I bought a 350 shortblock, put on some dbl camel hump heads and the stuff listed above. Only lost twice in that car. Once to a Roadrunner that had tunnel ram with two 4's sticking out of the hood. We went from a roll....well I never had a chance. He wouldn't run me from a dig. The other loss was to my brother who had a built '56 chevy 350 bored .60 over, balanced/blueprinted, special heads w/205 valves. roller rockers/cam and more, plus 4.56 gears with a spool.
Oh yeah, I had the '67 Camaro too. Slower than the '65 but got more races in it.
