It might matter. I asked a guy at the Motorcycle show if I could use a biker full face helmet and he said they are built differently and that car helmets need to be flame resistant...

Anyone back that up?

How about a link to a website with approved drag helmets.

And yes, it'd be great to get the kind that the lower part flips up.

Its true that motorcycle helmets are: mass produced, one-time use, thick and usually not fire resistent. In contrast car helmets are lighter, fire retardant, much more expensive.

I have the Bell Mag 4 open face. After I got it, I read that some associations require a full-face helmet in convertible/open cars. Best to find out what the groups you expect to run with require.

Racing in the early-mid-70s I had a Bell Star. It was good protection, but a pain to use with glasses. Had to modify the liner to allow putting them on through the eye port.

Look for a SA2005 or higher rating. NHRA rules I belive. I could be wrong

I have 2 helmets, same model, ones open face, ones full face.
Dont have my full face photoed, but my son has my open face one on.

I was thinking of road racing, you are right Caution, I should have been more specific. (I sometimes just assume people can read my mind)I don't know much about sanctioned racing, but I am going to mess around with it this spring and learn what I can. I just wondered if anyone had a favorite brand or style that worked better for some reason than another one.

Some good tips I hadn't thought of so far... anyone else?

Thanks!

I dont know what SCCA requirements are.

Ibelieve M ratingis sufficient formost cars who run 13.99 or quicker.
I think SA rating is only required for Proffesional Categories and Alcohol Cars.

The local tracks here (NHRA or IHRA) dont require a helmet at all until 7.99/12.49.
Thats for the regular program. NHRA/IHRA Regional would be their rules.
