I use a Zamp M2005/DOT approved helmet I got from Jegs for $69.99. Open face since I wear glasses. Easier to take off and put on, too.

SCCA and NASArequire Snell M/SA/K95 or better for autocross/performance driving/time trialsand Snell SA2000 or betterfor road racing:

SCCA Rules:
Autocross-
http://www.scca.org/documents/Solo%2...7SoloRules.pdf
Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on
course: All helmets meeting the current or two immediately
preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA, K, or M), or SFI standards
31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, or 41.2A are acceptable.

Performance Driving Events/Time Trials
http://www.scca.org/documents/Club%20Rules/2007TTR.pdf
For PDX Events (Level 1):
All participants shall wear long sleeves and pants (at least 100% cotton
material recommended) and shoes which fully cover the foot at least to
the ankle while on course. Helmets which meet Snell M-95 requirements
or higher are required.
For Club Trials Events (Level 2):
All participants shall wear long sleeves and pants (at least 100% cotton
material recommended) and shoes which fully cover the foot at least to
the ankle while on course. Helmets which meet Snell M-95 requirements
or higher are required. Event organizers may include any of 10.20 sections
1 through 8 in their supplemental regulations.

Road Racing
http://www.scca.org/documents/Club%20Rules/GCR2008.pdf
Crash helmets approved by the Snell Foundation with Snell sticker
2000 or later Special Application (SA2000), or by the SFI with a
SFI Sticker 31.1a for open faced helmets and a SFI sticker 31.2a
for closed faced (if purchased prior to 12/31/04), SFI 31.1 (if
purchased after 1/1/05), or by the FIA standard 8860-2004.

NASA Rules:
http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf

HPDE/Time Trial/Open Track:
Have proper safety equipment, as per the CCR (Section 11.3—primarily anM95 or better helmet. The equipment requirements are no different than inHPDE.)

Road Racing:
All drivers are required to wear an approved helmet while on track. Helmets must be
approved by Snell and carry a sticker of Snell 2000 ( SA2000) or better*. Ratings other
than that of “SA†(Special Application), i.e. “M1995, M2000â€, are not acceptable.
*Alternatively, helmets with an FIA certification of 8860-2004 are acceptable. It is
strongly recommended that any helmet sustaining any substantial impact be replaced.

Hope this helps clear things up.

Not enough info.... Are you referring to a specific N.Y. track's rules, or a sanctioning organization's rules (NHRA, SCCA, NASA, etc), or a local club, or to a N.Y. state law?

As to the Snell requirement, are you referring to "M", "K", or "SA" Snell certification? Makes a big difference, you know.
