The guidelines I use:

Conventional or Syn Blend (API SM)
If you do lots of short trips (less than 5 mi) so the car never gets warmed up 3000 mi or 6 months max.
If you do primarily highway and the car almost always gets to run at least 20 minutes 7500 mi or 6 months max.

Name Brand Full Synthetic (Including GIII)
Short Trips - 5000 mi or 1year (longer if you do analysis).
Highway - 10,000 mi or 1 year (longer if you do analysis).

Current (2008) Ford Requirements for warranty are 3000 mi Severe Duty and 7500 mi for Normal Duty.
I liked the old 5000 mi Normal Duty as I think it fit the average driver better.

I personally use full synthetic and change at 500 mi (1st Change), 3000 mi (2nd change), and every 5000 mi / 6 month OCI
afterwords because my car somtimes goes a couple of weeks without going over 5 mi at a time and is still under warranty.

For the driving cycle my car sees I would imagine the 5W-20 has dramatically reduced wear over 5W-30.

At the Ford Dealership I work at, "they" recommend every 5,000 miles for their synthetic blend and the same with fully synthetic. They also state it should be changed every four months.

I personally change mine every 3000-5000 miles.

every 3k miles, although I've only put 6k on it this year, so I guess it's not too bad doing one every 6 months

While I've never done any oil analysis tests on my Mustangs, I have done them on a lifted 06 F150. I ran Royal Purple with a Motorcraft filter and changed every 10,000 miles. I live on a dirt road and the truck saw offroad use on a weekly basis. The oil analysis said all was well even after 10,000 miles.

There is a reason Amsoil says 25,000 miles with their full syn oils, and why BMW's can go 25,000 miles before their scheduled oil changes. The old school 3000-5000 mile changes do not apply for the newer, tighter tolerance motors with the advancements in motor oil technology. I'm going to change every 10,000 km's for now with my Amsoil, but I'll send a sample away for analysis after 10,000 km's, just to see where its at, in the spring.
