placing a jack under the rear diff.
Hello All,
I've been a member for a few weeks, this is my first actual post though. I got my 08 GT in October, but I do alot of daily driving and It was timerotate my tires today (2 miles on it when i took ownership and I have 5,000 on it now). In the owners manual there is a big red flag to not jack the rear of the car by lifting under the rear differential with a floor jack. I have owned alot of rear wheel drive cars, but this is my first Mustang and wanting to play it safeI opted to jack under the rear jack points and end up having it take longer than expected.
The question at hand is, is there a reason why they say not to do this (am I goingt to cause some sort of damage), or is it a general safety issue. Every other car I have lifted this way, I have never had a problem nor have had a safety issue.
Thanks in advance.

Oops I always use the rear diff.. but I use jackstands. Haven't had any problems. They probably just say that so you don't jack it up by the rear diff and change your axleback without jackstands. That would be very dangerous.
heres the old school of thought as to the potential damage to the car. lifting the weight of the car via the differential housing puts undesirable strain on the axle tube joint where they attach to the differential housing which may cause a break in the weld. safety reasons should be obvious as the car could tip side to side and slip off the jack. i personally have lifted many cars via the diff and never had a problem but i never remove the wheels until i have the car set down on jack stands. i had an uncle and my best friend have a car fall off the jack and crush them. its made me very cautious when working under a car.
Thanks!
I always throw jackstands under there anyway, I had never seen that in an owners manual before so it had me thinking "hmm...I don't want to put any stress on the unit itself". I figured the safety end aspect of it is most likely fords hold harmless clause if it rolls or causes damage.
