For the guys with centrifugal blowers....

Have you ever had your system start making a higher pitched whirling noise than regular? Today while doing some normal driving, something started to make a higher pitched whirling noise. It seems like it is something on the blower, because every time I rev up a little, the whirling sound goes up. Also, it seems that at idle, the vacuum is a little high, maybe by 1 unit (at 21 instead of 22). I can still hit my full boost.

Does it sound like the blower is going maybe? Could it just be a leak in the intercooler or intercooler tubes? (My intercooler is a custom fit air-air Spearco) I cant seem to locate where the sound is coming from, and I cant tell whether it is the blower or air leaking through the tubes.....


Any ideas would be great

 

Well, mine makes considerable more noise on a cold start-up, but never while drving. Any oil leaks by chance? I guess it could be a bushing or bearing going out. While looking at the pulley does it have any wobble to it?

 

Does it sound at all like its coming up thru the transmission area. Like when you wind it up in first and second and then it kind of deminishes as you get into third? I have a vortec and mine seems to be doing what your discribing but to me it seems to be coming from around the transmission/clutch area. It was doingthisbefore and after I installed a Spec 2 clutch and pressure plate.

 

My SQ is starting to make a whiney sound louder than normal, I have no idea what it is. And at idle is where you can hear it the most!!

 

sounds like a fualty bearing in the supercharger. ive heard that before, is it pretty freakin loud? kinda a whistle??

 

yup, took her to the shop today. bearing is going out. people should definitely watch out for changes in tone to the whistle to the supercharger. it can lead to some bad engine damage
