As long as you don't do it at the correct speed, no problem, at least not for me. Beats slamming into the car ahead because the abs is humming along while you just slide. I did say that a properly set up tune will have "tire-spinning and very hard upshifts". Honestly, the only way I could see myself manually upshifting or downshifting on a regular basis would be if I had a full manual valve body and ratchet shifter. Not to say that won't happen after the SC goes on.

Hills are not an issue where I live or drive.

Formula one auto? How long? One,two seasons? Didn't work out.
Like the 6 wheel Tyrell... No advantage/gains, so they dropped the idea.
And the 1.5 liter 4cylengines revving at 22K were dropped for something much more reliable. It's only 3.0 now[8D].

F1 will try anything and it's a good thing. That's how you come up with ideas though.

Well obviously it didn't work out, but not because it wasn't functionable. Even hotrod pull tractors have autos.

I wouldn't shift this auto. It isn't a DSG or a Tiptronic.

With technology, you will eventually see all automatic trannies in allracing too.
Maybe something like they have in some moppeds (don't laugh), some kind of Variator, no shifting involved.

Then again, thinking back, there was that one time in a 65 Ford Galaxie with a 390 and auto on the floor. I was going through gears and went all the way into R. Locked that sucka up big time and killed the motor. Started right up with no damage but it was freaky. I loved that car. It had a shiny black top and nipple brown bottom. Came from the factory that way.

This doesnt make any sense... if starting the car in second is a bad idea... why would I not put the car in first when I stop?

What you're saying is to stop in second, then shift to first after you are stopped, and leave it in first to start. What I'm thinkin is the better alternative would be to shift to first when I'm below lets say 10 mph, and I know I'm going to stop. Stopping in second doesnt seem like a good idea, and most cars with manumatic trannys will not allow you to do it, and will shift into first without the driver doing anything.

I don't think I ever shifted into first while stopping in a stick.. (just put it in neutral).. so I'm not sure why you would force your car to do it in an auto. You would have to be going pretty slow for it to not jerk. First is for taking off.. not stopping.

thanks for all of the INFORMATIVE replies!

Lemme ask you this:
If starting in 2nd is a no-no, than coming to a complete stop in second would conceivably be a no-no also, right? Whats the prime mph to shift into first? Also, when decelerating, from lets say third gear, would it be possible for me to miss 2nd and shift right into 1st, harming the tranny?
