Default Good Idea to Fix Shifter Rattle??

hey guys-

so i thought i had solved the rattle in my pro 5.0 shifter when i recently took the arm apart, applied locktite, and re-tightened the bolts; unfortunately, i didn't. so, i was thinking before i fell asleep last night, what if i took some of that sound dampening material, cut a strip of it, wrapped the shifter arm in it a few times (underneath the boot ofc), and taped it up real good? do you think that this might deaden the noise at all? useless idea?

thanks in advance for your input!

If it's rattling because the bolts are coming loose, the strip of sound dampening material may cut down on the noise, but isn't going to prevent the handle from coming loose. I personally would like to hear the handle coming loose long before I'm driving down the road and all of sudden the handle is in my hand.

heh, funny you should mention that - it's happened to me already. long story short, i was stuck in a not-so-good area of philly with a busted gearbox and no tools to fix it. fortunately things worked out ok, but i have quite a stocked toolbox in my trunk now. anyway, the bolts are fine; locktite and firmed up well. besides, i know the warning signs when the handle is coming loose now - noise isn't the only change; generally shifting gets sticky way before the bolts totally come off.

so, maybe i'll try the dampening material then. anyone know where i can find some??

um, nope, that's not an option - the 5.0 is a great shifter and most am shifters rattle anyway. my point is just to explore a potantial solution... besides, the rattle isn't a huge deal to me, but if i can solve the problem, i'd like to.

You could get some Dynamat at any local audio shop. The only problem is that you will have to buy way more than you need.. I'd see if they have any scrap pieces from a recent install..
