RE: headers on nall 05 s
The stock manifolds are mandrel bent but they are definitely not as free flowing as headers. If you want more noise and power from the exhaust, get long tube headers. I personally am probably not going to change them because it costs alot of $ and the gains are not but maybe 10 H.P. I also plan on going boosted at some point so I will save my $. If you are going all motor definetly invest in some, every little bit of power helps.

yeh i agree, headers are really best when combined with other mods. the stock ones are pretty good but if you got cams, intake manifold, bore/ stroke ect then a nice set of headers will give you some big gains. when i get mine, i plan on going with some hot cams that move the powerband higher up (peak torque @ 5k-5.5k rpm) and reworking the valvetrain so i car raise the redline a bit. Then a set of shorty headers will help alot.

I guess I'm one of those "some people" that have been saying the stock headers are good for stock. Or more so, I've been asking a lot because they look decent.
I'm no mechanical genius or anything, but you look at most engines stock headers, and it's just a manifold that directly dumps into the same chamber, allowing for backpressure problems. This is where a new set of headers should give you the most benefit over stock. (most all the cars I've ever owned, were stock with this type of crappy header)
I figured it would be the same way on my new V6 Stang. Then I opened the hood and actually looked at them. For being "stock" they don't appear to be that bad.
I still plan on upgrading my headers, it is just now much further down on my list. I think for the $, changing to a dual exhaust, or perhaps replacing your catalitc converters for high-flow versions, or maybe even a high flow air filter, would be more beneficial.
Then again, that's just my opinion...
