I have had a scanner since the good ol Bearcat BC250 programmable days
to the modern TrunkTrackers I now have. From the good ol days of VHF-Lo
and VHF-Hi simplex transmissions to the900Mhz MDTs and trunked multi
frequency computer data controlled radios of today. I have one at the house
hooked up to a VOX recorder and yes I have reviewed the tape after
being pulled over. They had computers or MDTs in the cars around here
and radio traffic went to almost nothing. They have since nixed the
problematic system and went back to the trunked radios.

The AUX input for the stereo works good with the headphone out
jack of my scanner. Just be sure and turn it down/off when they pull
you over.

Doggone man, you could control a manned moon misson from your house!! Quite the sweet set up you have.

The fact is police/fire scanners are not illegal in Illinois. The Chicago police officer is mistaken or he is just making up his own laws and enforcing them.
It is illegal to transmit on restricted law enforcement/emergency frequencies but monitoring them is not a violation of any FCC or Illinois statute.

Now having been a tactical officer for many years in IllinoisI can state that if I stopped a car or person with a scanner on their person, I would be highly suspicious of them being part of a criminal operation (drug dealer/ burglar/jewel thief etc). So if you have a police scanner in your car and you get stopped don't be surprised if some CPD officer beats your azz a little.
(everybody resists arrest in Chicago...)

I used to have a moblie unit in my Truck when I was a Volunteer FireFighter. Sometimes it helped get a jump on a call (ie They would always call the PD 1st to a accident scence before they would call for EMS and Fire). I needed a signed card from my Fire Chief to allow me to have the Scanner in my Truck. Northern Indiana.

IL cop doesn't even know what he's talking about. Surprised you don't even know your stuff. Go to any radioshack and pick one up. Nobody's going to jail for having a legal scanner on them.

Hmm..on the illegal legal side. These things ARE illegal in MOST states when they are MOBILE. But are perfectly fine to own in a house etc. And most of the states will allow you to take them mobile once you go to a CB operators cert course. and to the guy who had the drug bust near your house..you got some damned stupid PD or something. Because that is a common law amount us..we NEVER go over the net with vital info or situations such as rape etc.

hey guys..
just wondering if any of you have scanners?.. mobile or fixed..
was lookin on youtube and saw where these ppl had it.. i guess it would be cool to find out about accidents, and fires, and then you would know if you about to get pulled over! .. lol whcih would suck..
and do they run your tags from their car? or radio it in?
you're a firefighter and you dont know about this? And don't have a scanner?

I guess it's just different where you are, around here everyone that has any remote interest in the FD has a scanner. They are not illegal even if they are mobile... You have a right to listen to what they are saying. However I have seen them impound a car because it was a known drug users car that was caught in the middle of a bust, and so they said he was using it to evade police.

I have the Radioshack Pro-96 Digital Trunking Handheld Scanner. I keep it in the stang, that way I can go to calls, and listen to the cops etc. I have learned of DUI checkpoints, accidents, and not to mention calls on house parties etc. This unit was $500 when I bought it, you can get cheaper analog ones but my entire town is going digital in a year so there was no point in buying an analog just to later have to purchase a digital.
