Default Manual transmission problem !!

Hi everyone,
I have a new 2008 Mustang Gt with 5-Spd manual transmission. When cold, like in the morning, my trans is hard to shift with a clunk when shifting 1st gear to second, and 2nd to 3rd. Not a grind, but laomsot like it wants to, it just makes a reluctant shift with an annoying "clunk".
After about 10 or 15 minutes of driving it goes away, but that is really not acceptable since it only takes me about 10 minutes to get to work anyway.
I tried switching to Royal Purple Synchromax, it is an ATF made for manual trans that call for ATF. Filled with 3.2Qts. That did not help.
Stealership said I just need to warm the car for about 10 minutes in the morning..that is rediculous, plus I tried it and it did NOT help, since that doesn't really warm the trans anyway.
Anybody else have these issues?
Called Tremec and they are supposed to call me back this afternoon we'll see..
thanks

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are going to tell you the clunk originates in the drivetrain and everyone pretty much experiences it. I have a V6 manual and I have a bit of a 1-2 clunk, I think it has something to do with the two piece driveshaft which both the V6 and GT mustangs have. I agree it is unacceptable, but the dealership doesn't seem to care, I have installed a short throw shifter and Redline D4 transmission fluid and shifting is much more tolerable, although the clunk is still there at times.

I will let you listen to the GT guys since we have different cars, and I hope they have an answer for you, and possibly one for me.

Best of luck.

I've experienced a similar feeling in my 07gt. Mine always got better after a couple of minutes of driving, at least with reguard to the hard to shift problem, so I just assumed the trans and tranny fluid needed to heat up a bit. I don't think my problem is nearly as bad though, because I've never given it a second thought. The dealership telling you to warm the car is nonsence though, theres no useful effect on the trans there, and its not necessary for our engines either...kinda stange sugestion from them. Hope you find something useful to help you.

I have an 08 GT manual, I start up and go every day with no hard shifting or clunking at all. In fact when I was looking for mine I drove probably 10 different cars and none of them had the symptoms you are talking about.

To be honest, I can't tell you if mine clunks or not, the radio is always up from the moment I pull out of the garage, but yeah, getting it into first first thing in the morning is sometimes difficult.. Mostly it's fine, definitely nothing that has caused me any concern or need to call the dealer or Tremec..

Every manual trans car I`ve ever had shifted more smoothly when warmed up.

No surprise there..

Mines a little rough in the morning... Then again I can't remember a manual trans car I've ever owned that doesn't start out a little stiff... There is something to it warming up but like was said earlier, sitting idling isn't going to help that any...

Thanks for the responses. I'm mainly trying to find out if this is normal for these trans or not?
I have owned a lot of cars with manual trans through the years. The last i had was a Pontiac TransAm with a T-56 (6-spd. tranny, also made by Tremec ). It would actually grind the 2nd-3rd shift every morning for like the first 2 or 3 shifts, then smooth out and never do it after that, until the next morning. I got to wher I would just shift from 1st to 4th until it warmed up.It did that from day one end never got worse, so i lived with it..
The new Mustang at first only did it on 2-3 shift, so i thought "typical Tremec trans".
But now 1st-2nd shift is getting that way. Like I said, it does not actually grind but shift is rough with like a slight hesitation and then clunk going into 2nd gear and almost feel like it will grind, if i try to shift it any faster at all it probably would. Once warm it is all buttery-smooth.
Maybe I'm worried about nothing. If it never gets any worse i may not try and force the dealership to do anything. I'm sorts scrared to let the dealer work on my new car anyhow.

Its normal. I have a problem with getting it in reverse in the morning sometimes. Seems like it got a little harder once i put the saleen shifter on. I always go back and forth from 1st to 2nd in the morning cause it always feels sticky

Beg to differ slightly. A little bit of idling will get the oil splashed all over the things it drained off of overnight and will take a little of the "stiffness" out of the gear oil. Gears that turn in the oil even when not transmitting any power will warm it up and thin it slightly. I've got a 3550 Tremec in the thumbnail car that was moderately cranky about the 1-2 shift first thing in the morning once the overnight temps dropped much below 32°F. A minute or two of idling and/or 15 - 20 mph neighborhood driving was usually enough to smooth things up considerably. Although I never experienced any 2-3 issues in that car, I don't think there are any huge differences internally between the 3550 and the 3650.
