Ford saving some money, take a look under your car, the entire rearend is bare metal, or in most cases rust. I spent 3 hours today sanding the rust off of mine and putting a coat of black paint on it.

Did you paint those?[8D]
Ive noticed these bare metal rusting parts first day I took my mustang home from the dealer... My advice to anyone who is trying to keep these mustangs for a long time is to sand the rusted parts, wipe down with some acetone to remove any foriegn or bodily contaminants, usch as oil's, then paint it....Its mild carbon steel and its ghona rotten eventually,,If you paint over the rust, its still ghonna rotten,,Rust is like Cancer, you have to get rid of it so it does not spread....,Im Dissapointed with Ford on this issue, becuase I Love Mustang's
The company that makes the stuff he used also makes a kit that includes a cleaner, primer, and finishing primer. Thats the stuff I'm using. Before I checked the supports for the interrior I already was going to do the rear end with it before a coating of rust inhibitor.
As far as brakes are concerned, they are disposable after a few years anyway.
The underside of my ride is a rolling advert for WD40.
That oil based rustproofing system is good for keeping the surface rust at bay as well. I've had my new truck and the wifes VW doneand it transforms that sea of Red into nicely lubricated clean metal.

I expected mine to be that way when I ordered it. - most american cars are that way.
I think I had my mustang about 3 weeks, when I rented a bay at a local "U-Fix-It" shop and prepared/painted all the exposed non painted items under my car. I also took a can of good old Rustolium and painted the braces and brackets under my dash. I even lifted the carpet and popped out the back seat, and hit where ever I could reach.
It is not at all unusual, and I would venture that 98% of the mustangs out there will have surface rust on frames and brackets. I doubt it will every cause any problems in the interior parts, nor any heavy under carriage parts.
So Not to worry - but it it bothers you, just prime and paint it.

I see quite a bit of this on the '06 GT Convertible that we recently acquired. There is more of it on this car than any other that I have ever owned.
I'm going to hit it with some stove polish when I pull the seats out to install the Rostra seat heaters.
