Helpful tip for long-term owners
If you are planning on keeping your Mustang for a long time or if you just want to insure that whoever owns it down the road won't have rust issues, here is a helpful tip.
A well designed system to drain water from the body and doors is important for the rust-free longevity of any car. Many auto manufacturers (not just Ford) put cute little dress caps over some of the drain holes that may look nice but they actually cause more harm than good. Your Mustang has those cute little black caps in the drain holes in the bottom of the doors. All these really do is trap in small bits of debris and that then holds moisture and water in the door bottoms and ultimately the doors will rust, especially in northern areas that use salt on the roads.
Look on the bottom of your doors and you will see two 1-7/8" x 7/16" black plastic caps that cover over the drain holes. Just take your fingernail and pull them out from the middle, they come out real easy. If you have just washed your car you'll see what I mean with the water being trapped. I have removed them on several of my friends Mustangs and they all had some dirt and debris trapped along with moisture. With the caps out the water and dirt will drain out much more effectively.
Take a look at yours and you'll see what I mean.

What's the purpose of the caps? Nobody ever sees them (well, I have while washing the car and have even had mytowel get caught on them and yank them out from time to time).
