RE: a/c effect performance?
The A/C compressor is a load on the engine. Years ago, the word was that the A/C sucks about 20-30 HP from the engine to operate. I know that my SUV really bogs down on hills when I'm pulling my boat or camper with the a/c on. It absolutely takes some useful power away. How much for sure? I can't say. But I personally don't like running the A/C or the defogger unless I absolutely have to.
Oh yes. The a/c has the parasitic effect of a supercharger without the performance benefits.
But unlike a supercharger, you can turn the A/C off. At the track, you should turn off your A/C for two reasons: 1) to prevent the system from dripping water onto the track; and 2) the A/C compressor draws MUCH less HP with the system off than when it's on (no, I don't have any dyno charts to back that up)
doesnt the compressorpulley have a clutch that engadged and disegages when needed? On my last car (Audi)the ac pulley would disengage when full throttle was in use.
Probably very little effect. No way it's 30 HP. 30 HP is 76,000 btu/hr, or 5 tons of refrigeration. That's a nice home air conditioner for a good size house. Maybe 5-10 HP.
