A little mod...
I hate sticking things to my windshield, and I would never glue things to my dash, so I had a problem because I want to use my portable nav system. So this weekend I did a little modding. I cut and attached the support arm directly to the power plug. The only real problem was shortening the 4 foot cord to about 4 inches. I think if I make another one I will be able to do the wiring much cleaner.

Mine runs off the batteries for hours at a time and I wanted it to be up where I can see it and still be looking at the road. Looking down, even to just above the power plug, isn't as safe. With it mounted this low on the windshield it barely covers any of the road view. Much less than it looks like in this pic.

The Navigon unit uses the USB plug as an antenna for the traffic updates. And the factory GPS is much lower where the raidio is. I agree higher is better, but when people look at my car from the outside I don't want them seeing a suction cup stuck to my window.
