Good explanatios just above!!! A long time ago I had a "65 GTO 4:10s at 60 mph tach was at the very high end, don't remember how high. if you do a lot of highway driving stay away from 4:10s. 3:73s going into my Stang this summer. About $600.00 installed. Way over my head to do myself.you need a crush plate, seals & luberacant. the lube alone is about 60.00.......gears about 175.00.....labor quoted to me about 400.00
I think we worry to much about rpm in new cars. My 1969 383 Roadrunner with 3.23's got 19 mpg highway (60 mph).
An Automatic S197 with 4.30's would turn less rpm than 3.08's in the old car. Maybe less than 2.73's when converter slip on older automatics is considered. Thats what Overdrive Transmissions are for.
