Default Third brake light decals

I got a black decal for my third brakelight that has text in it....but in order for it to go on smooth, i need to get rid of the lettering on the bottom of the lens. Wondering how anyone else went ahead and removed the lettering without scratching the lens?

thanks, colton

I removed some lettering from the fuse box cover and the short of it is ... just leave the lettering and deal with it.

You could try sanding it off but it's going to screw up the whole lens something aweful. The only other thing I can think of is to use an exacto knife and you might be able to slice them off but they might look white and be more visible and worse than when you started.

You can work the lens material just like you do the finish on your car: use a sharp X-acto knife to cut the lettering down, or file it with a nail file or emery board, rub it out with fine sandpaper and rubbing compound or paint-cleaner compounds. If you restrict the area that gets scarred, it may be worth it. As aziraphale said, it would be easy to mess it up and you might wish you hadn't started. I sliced them off, gave it a couple strokes with a nail file, and called it good enough.

Just put my third brake light decal on my car. Tried grinding the lettering off but it ended up looking worse so I just put the decal over the raised lettering. It doesn't look that bad.

I put that decal on our V6. I sanded the letters down. Tape off the rest of the lens. Also, I replaced the OE bulb with a brighter Sylvania. Looks great.
