Locking gas cap install?

RE: Locking gas cap install?
Interesting--I bought a Motorcraft locking gas cap for my 2006 GT a couple of years ago and forgot about it until yesterday. Put it on and almost immediately got the CEL even though thediagnostic onthe message board indicated Gas Cap OK. Going to disconnect the negative bat wire to reset the computer to see if this solves the problem, as I had no problems with the stock cap in 2.5 years of ownership. By the way, the lanyard on the locking cap seems to be slightly shorter than stock and is reversed. Perhaps I will also switch to the stock teather, or just take the thing off completely.

It ended up not being difficult to pull the lanyard off and put it on the new cap anyway. The rubber is pretty stretchy.
However, I pulled the end of the lanyard attached to the fuel door off because I figured it would be easier to work with then (totally not necessary) and when I was attaching it back to the fuel door the little tree clip was difficult to get back in, so I actually dinged my fuel door from the inside while reattaching the lanyard because I was pushing so hard to get the tree clip back in.
Luckily I got a paintless dent removal guy to fix the ding for about $50, but it was almost funny. I'm trying to protect a $50 tank of gas and I end up costing myself that much to get a dent taken out as a direct result.
I've since removed the lanyard from the cap and door completely, but certainly a learning experience there.

Didn't you guys notice that there is a hook on the inside of the fuel door. You lay the caps teather in it and it keeps the cap from touching your car. Or is that new for the 2008's?
I'm not sure which one I'll get a locking cap or door. But I should get something.

Just so everyone knows you can't siphon gas out of tanks. It's been a while since you could. The only real reason for them is to prevent some retard from putting something in your tank. I was at a hotel recently, on the way home the "Check Gas Cap" light came on and I'm like Oh God. So the whole trip home I was wondering what happened, thinking some punk put something in there. I got home to check it, the gas cap fell out so it was completely off, no sign of anything being put in there. It's been two weeks and nothing wrong so I think I'm in the clear. Regardless when I got home from the hotel, I was online ordering the gas cap.
