quick internet research indicates that the 99 cobra recall was a voluntary recall by ford after blueovalnews.com and car and driver first reportedthe power deficit.

no mention of a federal lawsuit or "order" is ever mentioned.

this would be a civil issue between the manufacturer and the consumer.

anyway, i had the corrosion problem on my 2003 explorer. dealership fixed it no questions asked. did a great job, too!

It's true that almost every recall is for saftey issues, there have been recalls for non saftey problems. The 99 Cobra is an example. The Feds ordered it recalled by court order because it did not meet the advertized H P output. Owners filed a lawsuit and won.Ford had to rework the intake, and exhaust so that it would make the320 hp itclaimed to have. That was for all owners of that year. Even so this hood corrosion problem will never make that kind of status.

The TSB says it is due to iron contamination. So technically it's not rust.

Kara, did you check under your hood? That's where the problem starts.

Anyway, I'm gonna go roll by Ford tomorrow and talk to the bodyshop guy, and I was wondering if any of you have a link to the TSB for the hood paint bubbling. Bodyshop guy will probably know what I'm referring to, but I'd like to have a printout with me just in case he hasn't seen any instances of this before.

I checked through the TSBs listed in the S197 FAQ quickly, but I didn't see it in there.

Any help? Thanks.
Go to fordtechservicebulletins/hoodcorrosion. It will bring up the info for you.

You should have made them replace the hood. It may come back if they used the same hood. It's from iron contamination from the factory on the aluminum hoods. I had mine re3placed and painted. The Ford dealership that I was working at at the time fixed mine under warranty and mine was well out of warranty. Good luck with yours.

Recalls are for Safety issues. Technical Service Bulletins is where this would fall under.

Had to have Ford strip and repaint it.

I would say this has probably been resolved after 6 years.
