If Im going from learning on a mini cooper and being 'pretty good' at it and want to know if the Mustang will be too hard to shift (because its got a V8) what would you tell me?

My friend sold his 350z because it was too fast to shift effectivly

If the 350Z was too fast to shift effectively, then you will never be able to effectively shift a manual GT Mustang.

My friend has a mini cooper and making the "switch" so to speak is easy. You'll be fine if thats what you're worried about.

The manual transmission on these mustangs is a total piece of cake. I drove a 90 civic 5 speed for 12 years. After buying my 06 used I drove it back from Salt Lake back in February. Since then I have stalled the car exactly once.

you gotta be good at shifting to really take advantage of stick... and if the automatic is tuned you gotta be REALLY good at shifting to take advantage

I went from a 1992 toyota corolla to my 08 GT 5 speed and had zero problems. The corolla came from the factory with like 90 hp at the crank. Driving a manual tranny is the same no matter what the HP is. The only difference is pedal travel needed to engage/disengage the clutch. I have no idea what your friend is talking about saying that his 350z is "too fast" for him to shift unless he has like 8.20:1 gears in the rear end and twin turbos.

The modern Mustang manual transmission is one of the easiest I've ever driven. Especially the S197. It's a piece of cake.

I agree to a certain degree. However drive an Audi if you want a smooth manual transmission/clutch. The S197's transmission is very loud and unrefined IMO. It does it's job and I'm not complaining though. I do find a big difference between the V6 and GT transmission/clutches.

Some people prefer to cook themselves, rather than have people cook for them.

In other words, some people like/want control of their car. And if they're good at it (shifting), then good for them! A lot of folks find manuals more fun, more interesting and more appealing. Can't hate on the S197 5-Speed automatics though. They have a lot of manual "enthusiasts" converting lol. Years ago, primarly when the fox body came out...manual was preferred because Ford didn't have a strong enough automatic tranny to sustain/handle the power of the 5.0. Things have changed though, and I would take a GT with an automatic if I didn't have the option of manual. I wouldn't buy an Auto V6 though...no UMPH there for me
