Do different tires really perform all that differently?
Hey y'all,
I'm thinking about changing over to different tires from my Pirelli Zero Neros. From tirerack, it seems like I only have three choices and of those, I'm leaning towards the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S .
From speaking with the local tire shop and reading reviews on the internet, it seems like people for the most part really like these Michelins. That being said, what kind of difference should I be expecting by switching to them?
I don't go to the track (yet), and usually just use my car to zip around town. In a more secluded area, I'll spin the tires from a stoplight if I'm first in line and for the next few months I'll have access to really curvy roads, so the ability to corner well is a plus.
Will changing tires improve handling, gripping, etc. all that much? Or should I be good to go with my stock 235/55/17 Pirellis? I currently have almost 10,000 miles on my car, and have 17" wheels.
I'm still new to the whole modding my car thing, so please bear with me in helping this n00b. I figure since the only thing touching the ground on my car is my tires, those should definitely be the highest quality, especially since I drive her kind of hard compared to my previous car (1996 Toyota Avalon). Thank y'all so much!
P.S. Yes, I used the search function first.

If you were switching to a purely summer tire for the street or drag radials for the track, then it would be worth it. You'd see a much larger difference by switching to a different type of tire than simply going from one all season tire to another.
If you're not having a problem with the car's traction or planning to switch to summer tires, then I'd say wait and buy tires when yours wear out. At that point, you can go to differet wheels.
If money is no object, or you want larger wheels right now, then go ahead and have new tires installed.
Personally, I think lower control arms (lca) would be a great alternative. My Steeda LCA's don't seem to ride any worse than stock, cornering and traction have all been improved. Then, when you're old tires are worn out, you'll get the ones you want and you'll still have your improved lower control arms.
There are other brands out there that different people like, too. (Use search function.) Upper controls arms (UCA) aren't a bad idea either. (Gears are also good, but gas mileage won't drop 2 mpg with suspension modifications!)
i am no tire expert, but i had nitto nt555's on my old mustang, they were OK. now i have a new set of yokohama parada spec-x's and they are the nicest ride i have had yet, they grab hard, they arent too stiff a ride, and the thing that amazed me most overall....the cabin noise inside is sooooo much quieter
There is no single answer here. Some tires do one thing very, very well - Drag Radials have a lot of grip from a stop and go straight well. R-Comps are unbelievable in a dry turn but dangerous in the rain. All Season tires are compromises that do nothing really well but can do everything - snow, dry, wet, cold.
Completely depends on what you want to use the tire for. As an all around tire the Pirelli's are pretty good. If you want more grip you can go with a more summer oriented tire but nothing comes for free, you will be giving up cold, inclement weather performance for that extra grip.
To some degree traction off the line and handling performance are opposites - for traction you want a pretty high profile, more sidewall. For handling you want a lower profile. You really need to decide what it is you want before you narrow it down to specific tires.

i just ordered these riken raptors in a 255/50R17, almost the same diameter and a touch wider than stock. for 88.00 each plus shipping they look like pretty damn good tires.

I have the Michelin Sport PS2s, very like the A/S. I think they are exellent in all categories. Two criticisms: they wear out quickly according to comments on Tire Rack, and they are heavy. Two raves: quieter than the Pirellis, by far, and they make the Mustang ride more like the cars they were disigned for: big ol' Mercedes and BMW highway cruisers.
Oh, yeah: they stick like crazy!

alright...so i wont say much...but i just put the new nitto invos on my car..and i have never owned a nicer tire...i was running pirelli rosso's before these and was not impressed...over priced and the performance was mediocre...nitto invos were 400 dollars cheaper and according to the "experts" they are the best you can buy right now...+1000 from me...i completely agree
where i drive the climate change is radical.
typical temperature range is over 100 degrees throughthe seasons
different tires is a must and they really do make a diffence
i have 3 different sets of tires and will be getting one more set this summer
the car is going to die before i run out of rubber

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires are probably some of the best I have ever owned. They are an all season, so summer tires will be more grippy, but they do wear well, and handle fantastic. They actually even go in the snow quite well too!
