I'm sure you could run a 275/40 on there and it would be fine, its a pretty common tire size as well.

Use the calculator, it will tell you the sizes that will fit your rims, brands, etc. http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?

I also want to get the widest tire and keep the Revs per Mile about the same.
Here is what I have found will fit on the 18x8.5 rim in a Bridgestone Potenza RE050.
235/50R18 STOCK
9.251" WIDE
27.251" TALL
85.641" ROUND
740 REVS / MILE

245/50R18
9.645" WIDE
27.645" TALL
86.851" ROUND
729 REVS / MILE

255/45R18
10.039" WIDE
27.035" TALL
84.934" ROUND
746 REVS / MILE

265/45R18
10.433" WIDE
27.389" TALL
86.047" ROUND
736 REVS/MILE

275/45R18
10.826" WIDE
27.744" TALL
87.160" ROUND
727 REVS/MILE

275 is really to wide for the stockers, 265 is about the widest i would go on them for a DD car
