Gear help... 3:90 or 4:10
ORIGINAL: GT/SRT
OK...before you be "that guy"
So...if the more expensive Motive Performance gears don't whine...then help with this question:
3:90 or 4:10
I just need some help figuring out which to do...some pro's and con's.
***No matter what I do, I'm buying some new [wider] wheels and new tires for traction.
Thanks guys.

Pros: The gears give you much more torque from the take off. They put you at higher rpms in each gear. You will hear your exhauset much more. You can take right and left turns in 3rd instead of having to downshift to 2nd. On the highway, 5th gear is super responsive!
Cons: Your gas mileage will suffer, especially when you enjoy your new gears and put your foot into it. You will wish the car had a 6th gear on the highway.
If you plan on new rims and tires, for instance 285/40/18's on the rear, you will see an additional rpm increase in every gear, due to the tires are just a bit smaller than stock.
If you are willing to risk the chance with 3.90 Motives and/or suffer the possible whine, at least you made an informed decision.

Thanks for your help guys...I don't race much on the highway anyway [I actually haven't raced since I bought the car---which is a smart thing] so I probably wouldn't even need to worry about it.
I've pretty much decided on the 4:10's. Thanks again for the insight.

I'll assume you use the term "guys" generically, so I'll tell you about having 4.10's in my 2005 GT.

With a rear tire of 235/55/17, overall tire height is 27.17"
Rear of 255/45/18 is 27.03" just a bit shorter but this will mean your speedometer is a bit too fast (1/3 mph), because your tire will make a complete revolution in less distance. This also gives the slight effect of a shorter gear, and your car will sit 1/6 inch lower. [8D]

Come on.... you guys sound like a bunch of ninnies.. it's 4.10 and 3.90... not 4:10 and 3:90.. there is a huge difference.
If someone came in here and "pronounced" CAI "CIA"... it would sound just as uninformed.

Mine was 355 stock.....Iput 4.10's in mine .....and to be honest if I had a choice I would to 4.30's . The difference between a 3.90 and 4.10 would be barely noticable IMO.....& UNLESS you are doing lots of highway/ high speed running I would go 4.10's MINUMUM. The gear wakes these cars up in every gear.....big time. One of thebest mods for the $$ IMO.
The Stock rims on the GT-CS are 235-50-18 which are 762 RPM . I just bought 20" rims for the car.....with 305-35-20 Nitto Drag Radials for the back.....the are 727 rpm. So that is a 4.6% gear reduction / or ....4.10 x 0.9540 = 3.91. So When my new rims get installed (hopefully this week) My ratio will effectably drop to 3.90's. Again....wish I went to 4.30's or more.
Cheers
Mark
Exactly! you have to factor in rim/tire diameter. My next mod will be 4.10's. If I'd had some this morning that 08' vette wouldn't have started walking me at 70mph [&o]...
Lot more than that involved (like 50 more rwhp, driverand lighter weight) but I would've had a much better chance.
