First Oil Change Question

First Oil Change Question
So I've had my car for 3 months today and went ahead and changed the oil this afternoon. The car 4,400 miles on it, most of them highway miles but I do get on it a few times every tank. Well, when I was pouring the old oil back into the bottles I only filled up about 5 and 1/5th of the 6 quart bottles.
Is it normal to burn off that much oil over 4,400 miles? It seems a bit much to me...
BTW, the stock oil filter was a PAIN to get off... about broke my filter wrench doing it! [:@]

RE: First Oil Change Question
OK... actually, this is the first time I've ever changed the oil in one of my cars. So I was too sure what to expect.
I've been changing the oil in my motorcycles for years and have never seen that much oil burnoff with them, that's why I was a little concerned.

RE: First Oil Change Question
isnt a rule of thumb that the filter holds up to a qt of oil? did you take that into account also? i dont see one holding a qt. but i know if you tip it upside down and hold, it keeps comming and comming

I doubt that you burned any oil off. It's kinda like the washer and dryer that eats 1 sock... There often is a discrepancy between what you remove and what you put back in. But the filter still holds additional oil beyond what you can drain out of it so that's probably part of the explanation.
You didn't mention, but did you stick with the synthetic blend or did you go to full synthetic?

Consider extending your oil change frequency with the full syn. Some people (like myself) are comfortable going beyond the 5-7K mile change frequency that MOST synthetic blend users stick to. Others aren't. It's what you're comfortable with based on how you interpret the facts.
