Default driving choices...

All right here is the deal, I will explain the situation then please tell me what you would do.

I live in San Antonio, TX and until recently I had a company car that I could drive to and from work, which is only 6 miles. Several weeks ago we were told we had to park the company car at a goverment building (I work for the government). So, I found a police station near my house, only 1.5 miles. I then have to drive my pony 1.5 miles to pick up the company car and drive that the 4.5 miles to the office. Of course I also have the option of just driving the stang all the way to the office. Here is the choice;

Would you==

A. Drive the mustang only1.5 miles park it at the police station, risking a door ding (very close parking spaces) and leave it under the direct sun all day, or

B. Drive it all the way to work to take advantage of the covered parking, and the much less likelyhood of a door ding but putting atotal of 9 miles per day instead of just 3, not to mention the gas prices.

Thanks to all who reply......

I wish I had your choices as far as driving distances. I would choose option B, if indeed there is less chance of something happpening to the car.

you are complaining about 6 whole miles...this is a joke right?

also the 1.5 miles is very hard on the car.....going the full 6 miles is much better for the car...it will thank you!

9 miles vs. 3 miles/day. BWAHAHAHA!!!!.. Sorry..

Aherm...

I'd just drive the car the 9 miles so that it's better cared for...

I put 60 on mine a day... Trying to decide between 3 miles and 9 miles isn't even
a decision in my book. I don't suppose, rather than a company car, they'd give you a
stipend to use your own that would cover the difference in gas?

I'm in the 9 mile club too! Actually I drive about 8 miles to work. I've been wanting to buy a motorcycle for a while, but the wife isn't going for the "saving gas money" reason sinceI drive such a short distance!

To the OP, I say just drive it yourself and see if you can get an auto allowance instead.

Walk 1.5 miles and collect your car. It's cheaper and healthier ...

I'd even worry about the six miles. Seems to me all that unburned fuel flowing down the cylinder walls into the crankcase is not healthy.

As for the options, an ordinary quick walking pace is around 12 minutes per mile. how long would you spend on the hoof to save your car, some resources, and do your body some good? There are some neat-o folding bicycles that would fit in the gov't car trunk and cut down on your non-car time. Then you could ride somewhere at lunchtime, too.

Making some assumptions there, but the underlying premise works.
