Instrument Cluster

Instrument Cluster
What would happen if I put an instrument cluster from a GT on my V6? First of all, would it fit? Secondly, would it read that I was going 80mph if I was really going 60mph, or would it automatically read everything correctly?

If I replace it with the standard V6 cluster, will it have to be programmed by the dealer as well? The reason I am asking is that my clear plastic over the tach is cracked and I want to change it. I took the bezel off and it appears that I will have to replace the entire cluster because the plastic can't be separated.

After reading that im annoyed too... I hate people who think that since it only goes to 120 and theres goes to like 140 my Mustang is slower... Even a 00' v6 Camaro kid keeps bugging me even though his goes to 125... He says he is faster even after looking up the 0-60 times

It was cracked when I bought it (used from a dealership). I should have said something to them about it at the time, but it was a small crack barely noticeable. It has gotten bigger now. I think that they must have cracked it while they were doing a hurried interior detail getting it ready to sell. Just a guess.

Just came across this while searching for something else. I did a gauge swap in my F150, I replaced a XLT cluster with a FX cluster. I can't say for sure if the process is the same for the Mustangs, but I'm guessing it is. Couple things to be aware of:
1. The cluster holds your mileage. You'll need someone to program the mileage into the new cluster. It's not easy finding someone to do this due to tampering laws and the actual cost of the tool to do it. Call local speedo shops for a start. I paid about $120 for this service. IF you google you'll find it can cost up to $450. Consider resale value here as well if that's important to you. You could be lowering the amount a buyer is willing to pay.
2. As built data. The cluster retains this. ANY Ford dealer SHOULD know how to do this, but expect looks of confusion. You show up at the dealer with your original cluster in the car, they download the as built data. Put new cluster in, upload as built data. Without doing this step your gauges may work, may be off, may not work at all. Also, door chimes, interior lights, door ajar warnings, etc may not function without programming.
In my opinion it's completely NOT worth all the hassle just to have a speedo that has a 140 on it, I'd only do it if the GT cluster was completely different.
