would someone be so kind as to explain why this is necessary? i have an '07 and don't notice any problems - 06elnr, are you making the change preemptively, or because of something specific?

There is a TSB about the two piece plugs breaking off in the head
when you try and remove them. It gets worse over time and the amount
of miles put on the stang. Change them sooner than recommended and the chance of breaking off is reduced.
should I put alittle penatrating oil on them before I try pulling them out? they are stock and I have 29000 miles.
06elnr the newest TSB changed from Aerokroil (penetrating oil) to Motorcraft carb tune up carb cleaner which I bought from Ford for $10.00. Pull the COP's blow out the dirt with air, Loosen the plugs 1/8 turn take an eyedropper with about a half teaspoon of carb cleaner let stand for around 20 minutes the carb cleaner is suppose to wicker down and soften the carbon build up (which is what the problem is) on the lower end of the plugs.
I had to do mine (7k miles) just recently no problem didn’t even soak them down with the carb cleaner as I took the ratchet off after the 1/4 turn and if I could turn them by hand (via the extension) I went ahead and pulled them with out even using the carb cleaner which turned out to be the case. If I was unable to remove them by hand (without the ratchet) I would have soaked them down.
If you want I will find the latest TSB and post it for you I believe the latest is 1-2008.
The above is the way I did it but of course I recommend following the TSB.
