They are tell tale signs that the connectors were properly seated on the assembly line.
They break off when the lines are properly seated. It keeps Freon from being inadvertantly introduced to the atmosphere by mistake when the tech fills the system..

I cut mine off just last week after staring at them every time I opened the hood. I suspected as others have detailed what they were, and now I know.
Now I am all fired up about cleaning it up under there.
I have been eyeing that annoying wide black thing rotating around the air-conditioning pulley, the water pump pulley and the harmonic balancer... I figure I will cut it off next as it seems to make a lot of noise!!! I bet it quiets things down!

I've been thinking about draining that liquid stuff out of the transmission, rear axle, crankcase and radiator. That should lighten her up and free-up some RWHP...
