Default Headers and Midpipe Install

Hey guys. I bought a kooks long tube header and mid pipe set, and I am wondering how difficult it actually is to put on. I have put on my intake and tb and stuff, but nothing to the extent of headers or midpipe. My buddy was supposed to do it with me and show me how to do it but he is pussing out so I am hoping for some help. What do ya say guys?

midpipe is no problem......the longtubes, however, are a b**ch. haven't done this mod myself, but from all that i've read, it's one of the more difficult installs on the s197. this is mainly due to clearance issues. search the forum and you'll find many, many stories....

The above link is a pretty good description. I just did the exact same install on somebodys car last week. Took about 5 hrs in my shop that has all the cool tools. Just to clarify something about lifting the engine. If it werent for the lack of access to a few of the lower exhaust manifold bolts, the engine would not have to be lifted to get the old manifolds out, nor, the new headers in. They both go in and come out without lifting the engine. Releasing the serpentine belt will allow you to unbolt the a/c compressor and push it forward, resting it on the sway bar, to get to the 2 lower bolts on the front of the passenger side. Getting to all the lower bolts with the new headers in place is where the problems come up. It is just simply impossible to access them without lifting the engine up to free up some space for hands/tools.

Is jacking the engine up by the oil pan really a good idea?

Using something to distribute the weight (telephone book mentioned in the links) makes lifting the engine by the oil pan ok. There is NO problem in doing this. Dont worry at all about doing it.

I helped a buddy do a MAC LT install a few weeks ago, and the lower bolts with the headers on are a nightmare. It's not that anything about the install is difficult, it's just tedious and time consuming. Plan on your car being out of commission for two days, just to be safe (assuming you only work on it at night).
