Any rental places actually rent out manual transmission cars any more? Or is that practically impossible to find?

begin with feathering...make sure she knows that if she thinks she's letting the clutch out "slowly" to then immediately take it half as slowly! the conception of "slowly" is lost on a lot of people when a clutch is involved. when i learned on a dealer GT, i kept stalling because

1. it's hard to get a sense of when the gear is engaging if you've *never* driven a manual before
2. manual terminology is a tad confusing for a new manual driver or someone who isn't a total gearhead
3. i'm a moron

the hardest part about a manual is getting started from a stop. if she can get feathering down, she can learn to *gently* (lol) apply the gas. shifting is easily taught and learned. just have her glance at the shifter as she's throwing. i would imagine shift order is pretty intuitive for most people.

(... wondering if I should start a pool titled "On what date will PSUSkier post about what clutch to get?"...)

Oh, and did I mention Valium?

Im dreading the day im asked the same thing. I let my adopted sister drive my Audi when I had it and that was a HUGE mistake. It was a 6 spd with reverse up by first. She forced it into reverse while going like 10mph as she was coming up to a red light!! The ungodly grinding sound that ensued about made me crap myself!

Nobody but me has driven my Mustang. Fortunately my lil bro is getting a little Kia Rio that I can teach her on should she be so inclined to want to learn.

Make sure not to loose your temper with her. Dont get mad and raise your voice. This can be a good experience or a bad one. Its all up to you.

+1 on the Valium btw.

Haha I don't think it'll be that bad (at least that's the attitude I'm trying to keep). I'm sure there will be some cringing here or there but I don't think I could get mad at her for stalling/whatnot when I'm the one that agreed to let her do it. Thanks for the great advice all, I especially like the idea of beginning without the engine running. Seems obvious now but I don't think I would've thought of that.

Then again, even if she destroys the clutch, I'm going FI eventually anyway so it's inevitable some day anyway

Would probably be easier to just get a new girlfriend. Seriously.
