Exhaust sound

Exhaust sound
I just got to thinking, What is that the sound we hear out our tail pipes?
Previously i thought it was the semi-muffled explosion in each cylinder.
But all 3 valves are closed during the explosion stroke. Only to open the
exhaust valve shortly after. So just what is the sound we are muffling?

We all know that it is the sweet (if not sweetest) symphony of power!
What got me to thinking is, my friend has an '02 GT where the muffer is
before the axle and those GTs IMO sound better than our GTs no matter
what we do to ours, the 2 valve sound meaner.
Here is the example:
We both have Magnaflow mufflers with stock piping and H pipe in the middle
The only differences I can think of are:
- he has 2 valves vs 3 valves
- he has high-flow cat
- he has the muffler before the axle
Keep in mind this video was taken on my Olympus picture cam.

in your video the new edge gt does sound different. i think the difference is a combination of things, some of which are the 2 valve and muffler placement and cats as you said. your car sounded smoother, i think partly due to the valves and the the stock cats. those 2 valves have that hollow resonance sound from the under carriage muffler placement, whereas our axlebacks muffle the sound at the end. i think no matter what, our s197's will never sound like the 2 valves, but i try to make the most of what i got.

No, once again, you willl never get it to sound like a 2 valve car. The 3 valves are just different. Our cars didn't come with any tailpipes. If you move your mufflers in front of your axle and run pipe all the way out the back of the car (similar to the pypes mid muffler) the sound you get is the closest you will come to a 2 valve car. I went through 3 exhaust systems before i figured this out and had mine welded up. 6 months later, pypes released their kit =(. Well at least i didn't have any fitment issues =)

So many things come into play when dealing with exhaust sound. Even the tips. Just changing tips will change the tone. I have 3"x15" rolled tips on my exhaust and even though I have the same M80 race pro mufflers........mine sounds a little different than the pypes system.
