I run a 9500i and it has NEVER given a laser signal except when I used it in a rental car down in Brownsville, TX. I thought the laser function didn't even work! I don't run a front license plate and attributed it to them not being able to target me.

Mine has a USB port on the side, not sure about the 8500, maybe theres a firmware update???

Escort is great about recalibration though, you can always send it back to them for recal at no cost.

My pleasure. Lots of good info on that site and I spent a significant amount of time researching before I bought my latest RD (and other countermeasures). Since I typically run 2, 840 mile roundtrips per month, I need all the help I can get. LOL!

Laser is tough to detect, especially due to how tight the beam is, even at long range. Mounting the RD high on the windshield often results in not even detecting the shot since they aim low for headlights, license plates, etc.. I've picked up quite a bit of laser in Illinois and Ohio but I considered my ability to detect due to the operator using the laser gun as a handheld in lieu of a steady mount. Which is why I'm in the process of additional... countermeasures.

By any chance did you leave it in the window on a hot sunny day.... I had a different model, left it mounted for about 8 hours in blistering heat with the sun directly on the window for a good portion of the day and when I got back it was toast..... well not quite but it never worked the same again.....
