Default Stock Shifter/Boot Question

I just got a Roush shift **** and when I went to remove the stock **** I ran into a problem (for me at least).

After unscrewing the stock **** it seems the shift boot is connected to it. I was under the impression that the **** should just unscrew and pop off leaving the threaded portion of the shifter and boot remaining. However I can't separate the boot from the stock ****.

Any ideas? Do I just need to pull/pry it apart?

Pull real hard, it's got a bungee ring in the boot that sits in a little channel that is covered at the bottom of the ****

Mine unscrewed, and I popped the retainer off the boot.
