I was recently in contact with a very reputable performance tuning shop about a gear install. This was the response:

> $85.00 - Bearing Kit
> $36.00 - Royal Purple 75w140 Gear Oil and FRPP Friction Modifier
> $400.00 - Labor
>
> $521.00

This was without me providing anything other than the gears themselves. That kit seems pretty complete to me...

What shop did you go to Andrew? I had my gears done at Performance and supplied the gears, bearings and fluids. I ended up not needing the bearing kit and the install was $250.

Funtimes- That was the same kit I ordered but didn't need the bearing kit since I didn't have alot of miles. I think I had 14000 when I had the gears put in and the shop said the bearings were still good. I ended up keeping the kit just in case I need it later on. Also when I took that kit to the shop the kit comes a 1/2 quart short of fluid so you may need to pay for that too. It was $13 at my shop.

whine is caused by manufacturing defects. Gears need to be within certain tolerances not to whine and cheap knockoff manufacturers are what whine. The problem is that for a short time FRPP started using cheap knockoff gears to sell to Ford Racing Customers, it should be almost impossible to find these now, the company that made them is called Motive and i think the way to tell is their gears were stamped with an M, but either way don't try to cut corners and just get the most genuine FRPP gears you can find and you'll be whine free.

Intakes, superchargers etc are things to find "deals" on, gears are not and probably the only thing I'd pay MSRP for always.

Evolution Performance in Aston, PA gave me that quote. MF people said that $400 was a bit steep for labor alone. I was inclined to agree. I would also be out the cost of the FRPP gears ($175). The bearing kit, oil and friction modifier were no problem even though I had less than 5,000 miles on the car...I wanted ZERO whine.

Turned out I also needed a tuner because the shop doesn't recalibrate the ECM just to compensate for the drivetrain changes...There's another $300-400...

All in all, a gear install costing me $1000+...woof... I know that a tuner would be useful to have in the long run, but with the blower in the back of my mind, I figured I wouldn't make it difficult on myself. I really have no use for the tuner now. I wanted to go into the blower install stock so I didn't have to remove or change mods that I would have made. Not to mention 4.10's are a bit crazy with a twin-screw. Because this gear install wasn't going to be as easy as I thought, I made the simpler move and put the $900 toward a Saleen SuperShaker, installed by Brenspeed, preserving the factory warranty. I think I made out alright haha.

Yes you'll be impressed every time you mash the throttle in 1st, 2nd or 3rd
