Default Hurst short throw problems.

For those of you that have the hurst short throw shifter; I launched hard the other day from 1st all the way through 4th and i heard a rattle coming from the shifter underneath the boot. I have heard someone else that had the same shifter on this forum say that the hurst short throws have a rattle. Does anyone know anything about this. any info is appreciated.

Yes, rattling is not uncommon with the Hurst. Some say some dynamat and grease will fix it... I havent tried this myself. If you do a search you will find a lot of forums on this issue with the Hurst....

HUh. Just so i get this right, we are talking about when you are going through the gears at high RPM's. That is when i heard it. That was the only time i heard it and i have had the shifter for a year now.

Check the bolts that connect to the linkage, just make sure they arent coming loose...

You might want to search for the same proplem; I think that they say there is a boot that can be "made" to go on the shifter that will eliminate the rattle. I have a small rattle in mine and will have to fix it when I get a little time.

The general cause of the rattle in the Hurst is poor tolerances in the pivot ball and the body of the shifter. Or perhaps the c-clip groove around the top of the body is just too high. In either case, if your rattle is from the body and not from an improperly installed shifter arm, the fix is pretty simple and runs about $4, I think. I already had the product around as I use it for my firearms.

I had a rattling Hurst. I applied a bead of Break-Free Lubricant/Preservative around the top of the pivot ball right below the brass collar in the body. It worked down into the joint quickly and it took the rattle away completely. It's been about three months or so, and haven't had the need to re-apply. You can pick it up in the fire-arms section of most sporting goods stores. I've put together a quick pic to show where to apply the lubricant. It's the green line on the photo. It's a V6 shifter in the picture, but the V8 would be in the same spot, and it would also be similar (or the same) for the Billet/Plus version.

I believe his handle came lose from yanking on it hard.
The ball socket would have gave you problems earlier than that IMO...
