Default CAI with 87 Tune question

Before looking into CAI w/ tunes, I had a general question..

With an adjustable tune, are the results of an 87 tune still significant - worth getting a CAI? I am just thinking ahead, should the price of gasoline creep upward again, would having an 87 tuned CAI give me increased HP/torque without giving up MPG?

Thanks.

Compared to stock, yes the 87 Cai and tune will make a difference. With just steeda UDP, my car dynoed 276 RWHP and 282 RWTQ. On the same dyno with Bamachips 87 per tune and JLT intake I dynoed 293RWHP and 305 RWTQ. I did have 91 octane in the tank, so that may have increased the hp by 1 or 2. Where in CA do you live?

Thanks for the input.. San Fernando Valley. Does the 87 Tune with intake decrease MPG?

No, it won't decrease MPG, but if you start stepping on the go peddle because of the new power, then yes it will decrease.

Some people say it increases the mpg and some don't. But, once you install the tune you won't mind a small decrease. If you have an automatic, your perfomance gains will be even better than a manual's. If you get the higher octane tunes, it is a good idea to have the 87 tune available in case you are travelling and can't find premium fuel. Good Luck!

I think that's why I didn't see any improvement!

I have not run anything higher than my 87 tune from VMP tuning. I noticed it felt great and you can actually feel it pullll around 3200 rpms. Definately better than stock.

There is a bigger, noticeable difference between the 87 stock tune and the 87 custom tune then there is between the 87 custom and 93 custom tunes. Any changes in fuel mileage are minimal. Besides, you didn't buy the Stang to save gas. I think you'll be willing to pay the extra $1 or $2 per fill-up for the next higher octane fuel once you get a taste of these tunes.

Keep the tuner in the car. I run an 89 tune and have been on a road trip on a few occasions where I couldn't get anything higher than 87 octane.
