Default Gas milage

This might be a stupid question but i have seen alot of V8's on here saying they get 25+ mpg. I only get 16-18 and thats trying not to kill my gas milage. I drive so i can hear my exhaust alot of the time. I know not a smart idea. What should i look for or do to make my car get better milage. Thanks in advance.

I have an 09 with less than 1200k on it, and just took my first short trip in her last week. I avg'd 24 highway driving with a little bump and grind traffic.

Thing I love about this car, is if you want to drive the crap out of it, then your not worried about MPG,

IF your making a long trip, you can baby this thing and get GREAT MPG out of her....

Just depends how you treat her to what she gives back to you.....

FYI, mine mustang is a "she" LOL

First off, the on-board computer is typically conservative by about 1-2 MPG so if you're not already, begin hand calculating your mileage at every fill-up.

The S197 V8's get excellent mileage if you're easy on the engine. I don't know if they employee the technology that shuts down 1 or more cylinders at cruising speeds but who'd have thought you'd ever get 20+ MPG out of the typical performance engine on a GT? I say typical since not everyone can for one reason or another.

In your case, I'd verify that your speedometer is working correctly (against a GPS preferrably), then you'd know that your hand calculated values are worth a darn. City driving is about the hardest style to improve mileage on. And if you're a lead-foot by nature, it takes a lot of discipline to back off. Easing up on the gas, coasting towards those red lights, tire pressure, plus about a few dozen other things will help. There is no magic mod that'll improve your mileage either.

i take my baby on a road trip of at least 800 miles road trip a month to go see my gf. and my mpg's are anywhere from 23-26. that is riding at 80mph with some burst to 120.
i was shocked the first time i took my 07 on a long ride and the mpg's it got. and my 08 is the same way.
as nuke said, if you do a lot of city driving that is going to be very hard to change. on the interstate these babies do get really good gas miles.

With my GT 5-speed manual in 5th gear on Interstate highways with the cruise set at 70 mph I will average right at 25 mpg, both by the onboard computer and doing it by hand. If I cruise at 80 mph it will drop to around 23 mpg.

with 4.10s cruising at 90 from NY to AZ I averaged 25... at 90! Going 65-70ish I got closer to 29mpg.

I'd start shifting from 1st-3rd-5th, use your cruise control whenever you can, take it out of gear and coast amap. tire pressure, clean air filter, AC usage, windows down/up, stop/go all affect your mileage so knock out what you can

The easiest way to increase MPG is to change your driving habits. "Driving to hear your exhaust" is probably the worst thing you can do. I know it sounds great but it kills MPG. If you really want to improve MPG drive to not hear the exhaust. I have gotten as much as 28 MPG on road trips and usually average 22 driving back and forth to work. I bet those Corsa's do sound good though

The corsa's sound awesome thats why i wanna listen to them lol. I do alot of bumper driving. Live in the city work in the city just always in the city. Thats why i was hoping there was some 'special' mod you could use to bump the MPG. Well i guess ill just have to stop worring about my MPG lol.. Thanks guys for all your input!!

What you're seeing are on ramp to off ramp averages over long highway distances with little stop and go city driving. A few live in western states that are so incredibly flat they barely ever see a hill or a curve. For example, I was in AZ not too long ago. Pretty much flat, boring desert roads, great for gas mileage. I drove a huge portion of the state at 80 mph and got very good gas mileage...better than I would have in the east.

When I drive mine to and from work, about 12 miles with stoplights and then open highway. Speed limits range from 25 to 55 mph. My gas mileage is usually 17-19 mpg. The computer is off by at least 2 mpg, in my experience. The computer is reading about 21 mpg or so right now. I've owned this car for three years, long enough to know that means 19 mpg.

I think my gears are helping a little in the city, so 16-18 mpg in mixed driving won't be far off.

Put it in 5th instead of 4th, 4th instead of 3rd, etc. I get 16-18 on my car and most of that is 45mph.
