Default Thinking about a Weekend Project - Hurst Shifter

Hey Everyone -

I'm thinking about getting this:

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000016b

But, I have a few questions: Is this the shifter that some have stated has a rattle to it? How bad is the rattle? Is it worth it?

Next question is about the installation...Has anyone done this installation themselves? How is the installation done and how easy is it? I'm no mechanic, but I'm somewhat mechanically inclined. I can use tools, but then again, so can most monkeys. Think of your average guy and would he be able to do it, or would he be better off just letting a professional do it?

Thanks All.

I have that exact shifter and did the install myself. Personally I didn't think the install was bad at all. I think the hardest part was manuevering the shifter to make it go through the hole in the floor from inside the cabin. Otherwise it is a pretty straight foward install.

On the rattling, I have had no problems with mine. Although several others have reported rattling after the install.

Thanks for the response.

Also....Everything mechanically on my car s stock. I'm assuming that that's not an issue, and that I can just switch out the shifter without running into anything else I would need to buy or change.

The installation was easy. This was the first mod I installed on my car. I was able to do it with a set of ramps. You won't have a problem with rattling, just make sure you tighten the bolts good and maybe use locktite. It took me about 45 minutes.

The install if very easy to do w/ basic hand tools although it can beat up your hands in the process since the space you are working in is very tight. On the rattle, mine really hasn't been a problem, but from what I've heard it's usually the v6s that have the issues. There is a fix someone has come up w/ that is very easy to do while you are under the car to solve the problem, it involves adding a rubber tube as a spacer to take out the slack in the shifter. If you do a search you'll find it np.

I installed mine ini a couple hours. It could've been quicker but I didn't have a deep socket in the right size (I think it was 11mm but don't quote me.) I also needed to get a wratcheting wrench. It is tight quarters and like abrush said, the tough part was manuevering the thing through the hole.

I have had no rattles whatsoever. Make sure to use threadlock.

Awesome responses as always, guys. I appreciate all of your time and help. Feel free to keep 'em comin'!

One other question....I've got a couple of jack stands, so I have the option of putting up the front of the car, or the side. Can anyone suggest if one would be a better way to approach it than another?

I guess it depends on how tall your stands are. Mine, I think, are typical and I just jacked up both front wheels. I would've been afraid of rolling the thing over if I'd tried one side or the other. It's probably misplaced, it would probably need to go a lot higher to actually roll, it would've just felt odd I think. I had enough room underneath by jacking up the front.
