Default NORMAL OR NOT

hey guys i have a trans question. mainly the shifter i guess. but while out riding this weekend i noticed that when in 4th gear and coasting(about 40mph) i can take the shifter out of gear and put it into neutral with out pushing in the clutch. did it with the butt of my hand. didnt take a lot either. just kinda nudged it and it went straight to neutral. it will not do it in any other gear but 4th. i tried with the same amount of pressure in 2nd 3rd and 5th. and nothing. stayed tight in gear.
the reason i tried was becaused it looked like the shifter wasnt all the way in 4th gear. is the shifter gate supposed to close after you disengage the clutch so this wont happen? there is no grind when i am going into any gears so i know the synchros are ok but this kinda has me a lil worried. any input you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

I think I may have done that before... I've never purposefully tried, but there was one time where I felt like I slid the shifter into neutral before I pushed the clutch in. My mind raced and I thought "wtf did I just do... I don't remember pressing in the clutch..." I just assumed I was on crack and really had pushed the clutch in. Now I'm not sure :/

so did i. thought i had pushed in the clutch. but then i tried with no clutch and it came out just as easy. it only happens when i am coasting. never when i am on the gas. not sure if it is supposed to do that or if a gate is messed up. car only has 15k miles on it and has never been power shifted.

I think you guys just proved that the need to push in the clutch to shift is a conspiracy from the man trying to make one leg stronger than the other so we cant walk in straight lines making it seem like we are drunk when we get pulled over allowing them to slap us with fines so they can sit in their fancy houses for one more day

It freaked me out enough the first time to not purposefully try it again!

i am beginning to think that it is normal but most wouldn't know you could do it unless you try and who's going to try to push the shifter up to neutral while coasting. i just thought something was up when the shifter didnt seem to be all the way down. but it lines up with 2nd gear when engaged. and i even did it in 2nd when i was pulling up to the entrance to the dealership when going to lunch, about an hour ago. just thought it should take a lil more to get it out of gear kinda like putting it into gear, have to have to clutch in.

guess as long as its not going into gear with out the clutch engaged i wont worry about. and yes toxic it worried the hell out of me the first time i did it.

It's normal. You can do it with any gear if your revs are right.

Exactly as chain said.. your revs we're matched up perfectly... you can play around with that.. and go through all your gears.. up and down that way. Not necessarily a good idea.. but you will "feel" when its right in time.. and just a nudge and it will go up to or down to the next gear.

but is under 2k rpms the right match? i havent and wont try it at anything above that. just seen you can do it when the rpms are under 2k.

i understand power shifting. i know that these cars dont like it that much too. and have never powershifted any of the 3 s197's i have had. what i am talking about is when just coasting, 40mph in 4th gear and just a lil nudge it will come right out of gear and go to neutral. and will do it in 2nd too.
