Technically you don't need to or have to get a tune with any of the CIA's.
Manufacturer's aren't usually in the business of selling you something that will put them out of business. Think about it... (that's why they started advertising no tune needed)
Our cars are calibrated and can compensate for "X" amount of extra air flow. Most of the CIA measure the same right at the MAF sensor (anyone else ever notice that? They measure same as stock). I am aware that Airaid with the removable piece, C&L Racer and maybe another or two open up air flow a 1/2" more at the MAF sensor, but it is only reccomended that you get a tune. Now I am not against the tune (I have one myself). All tunes in addition to maxing gain potentials are written with richening to fuel delivery in order to reduce a leaning in fuel. The tuners do this so they don't go out of business.
So there you have it. Is there a BEST without a tune? Yes!! it's called stock
But if your going to spend money, then don't cheat your baby... Spoil her and go ALL out...
then why does my car's engine light go off when I have the car on the stock tune with the Steeda intake, hmmm?

i have the airaid intake and did notice a difference even without the tune; any additional airflow will be beneficial. regardless, though, if you have a tune in addition to a cai, there'll be a night and day difference

Agreed. Definetely there was a difference with the CAI, but after the tune - whole different story. I did it in stages so i was able to tell the difference with each mod.

I also installed the Airaid CAI (no tune required). I felt minimal performace gain (5-7HP), mainly in the higher RPM range. However, once I uploaded my Brenspeed tune, I felt an instant increase in HP/torqe!!!! It is like driving a totally different car!!!!
If you decide to purchase a CAI, that does not require a tune, I would highly recommend getting a custom tune, you won't be dissapointed.

out of curiosity, has anyone with the airaid (w/o a tune) taken out the inner tube thing to see if any codes were thrown? i'm tempted to check, but i assume it would.

I haven't ever tried that. However, I would assume that a code will be thrown.
