Default Car Issue. Help Please!

Hey guys,

I am having an issue that seems like it may be an expensive fix. First off, the car.

2005 Mustang Manual (just over 50,000 miles)...

And now, problem.

I can't keep the RPMs locked in. It's like the car won't stay in gear but it doesn't pop out. When I step on the gas, the RPMs shoot up but there is no pull in the car at all until I let off and gently ease into the gear.

If the car was popping out of gear I would say transmission but since it isn't I'm not sure. My dad brought up the transaxle.

I truly have no idea.

So, to everyone here.

Diagnosis? Cost? What causes the problem? Did I do something wrong or is this just normal wear?

It's definately something that needs to be fixed but I just want to know what is going on and why it is happening...

Thanks in advance,

HT

Sounds like the clutch is gone. You can get a new clutch for under $150. The labor is what costs a lot, but if you do it yourself you don't have to worry about it.

Been doing many long, smoky burnouts? Time for a clutch upgrade!

Agree with the others on a worn clutch, especially if you detect an acrid odor when trying to accelerate quickly.

This test should tell you if the clutch is bad:
Park the car, engage the parking brake, block each tire, depress the clutch pedal, start the engine, place the shifter in 4th gear, rev the engine to 1000-1500 rpm, and slowly release the clutch pedal. If the engine continues running, then the clutch is bad. If the engine stalls, then the cause of the problem is something else.

Clutch is worn at 50k miles? Did you take it to the drag strip a lot or something? Seems kinda pre mature. I would see if its the clutch, meaning look at it and see if there is clutch left before I make a decision.

Did you do a any burn outs or anything before this started happening? Meaning recently.

I had an 88 Mazda 626 with a little 110 hp 4 cyl. engine that needed the clutch replaced at 22K miles, and it was never abused. The pressure plate was determined to be defective, and it wore out the clutch disk. Mazda replaced it with their nickel.
Stuff just happens sometimes.

I've only had the car for around 15,000 miles. Second owner, it's my first car (V6). I haven't been doing any burnouts, not to say I don't drive hard...

I have been smelling a bad smell for quite a while. If the car is revved up while not in motion, like holding on a hill, it smells like the engine is on fire...took it to the dealer and they could never get it to make the smell, it happens quite often though, like when your sitting on a hill and you keep the clutch at the engage point and keep the gas engaged to stay still...

So, assuming clutch is the issue. What are my options? I saw someone say upgrade...

You just explained why you need a clutch. You do not use a clutch to hold on a hill. The reason you are getting the smell is because you are burning up the clutch using it to hold on a hill. There is no need to upgrade you clutch from what i see you have a stock v-6. The only problem with the clutch is the way you are driving it. Replace the clutch with a stock one and don't abuse you clutch like that.
