Default High pitched whine sound

There isn't anything wrong with my car, its just whenever i turn the AC on, the engine starts to make a high pitched whining sound. Whenever i turn the AC off, the sound goes away. I live in Houston, so its pretty hot at the moment, but I was just curious to see if this was normal or not. I know heat seems to be a car's worst enemy. Any help on this would be great.

best regards,

ben

I was going to make a joke and say, get off the gas cuz it's the supercharger. lol

could be the compressor making that sound.

Lose or worn belt maybe? Misaligned pulley? Are you getting cold air?

Actually come to think of it, the air actually isn't coming out that cold at all, at night its cooler, but during the day it isn't cold. i asked my dad before i read your response, and his answer was the same as yours. he thinks it might be a loose or worn belt. thanks for that info.

Bad compressor clutch for sure. Also, you probably have a leak somewhere in the system.

how much miles is on the car. My guess was the belt. If the belt is tight its not that of course.

Is this a common problem?

the car has 40,8xx miles on it. a loose/worn belt is all i could think of.

when you say common problem, do you mean does it happen all the time? i'm the 2nd owner of the car and i've had it since april '09, and i guess i really didn't start noticing this sound til around may. i thought it was the heat getting to the engine, but after reading all the responses i know that can't be it.

My 05 quit blowing cold air. Turns out the seal on the compressor had blown, was covered under a TSB but I don't know the number for it. Your dealer will know.
