Default Exhaust "burping"?

Pardon me as I know nothing about engines...

I have a V6. Last night I revved my engine (while in neutral) to about 3k rpms and noticed that the exhaust sounded like it was "burping" a little.

To check it more, I revved up and it stopped revving at about 4200 rpms. It would just bouce there and burp. Wouldn't rev higher than that. Not that I really wanted to, just to see if it would.

Does anyone elses stop revving at 4200 rpms? When driving, I am able to get it higher than that, though, if I try.

I don't typically rev my engine, but I just happened to notice this and was trying to figure out what it is.

Is it possible that it would be caused by accidently getting some water in the exhaust when washing it?

My V6 turned over to 5,000 miles on the way to work this morning and I have never heard anything like you described. Sorry I could not be any help.

Well, I did do a little revving this morning and didn't hear it any more. However, I didn't try to rev up to 4k, though.

However, even last night I took it for a drive right after it happened and it drived like a charm. The only thing I didn't like was the $27 fill-up.

Maybe it was a little water in the exhaust.. could that cause anything like I was describing?

Sounds like you are describing what may be 'backpressure'. I think its pretty normal, as I've heard it from a number of stangs, even my own when revving pretty hard. I actually like the sound, but its more of a gurgling, not sure if we are talking about the same thing though.

Yeah, gurgling might be a good way to describe it. Maybe that's it.

Well, I tried it again when I left for lunch. Started the car... first gear with clutch pressed all the way... revved up.. will not rev past 4k.

Anyone else tried this? It hits 4k and just bouces back... keeps bouncing.

Like I said, I've driven it up to around there and doesn't seem to give me any grief while driving. If I am in second gear or so and run it above 4k that's not too bad for the engine is it? If not, I'll give that a try.

Yessir, its called a rev limiter.
I had a V6 vert I was renting for a week, and yes, it was the same way, and the exhaust was simular to what you described. 4k miles when i got it 5800 when i returned the car.
I was disapointed in the 4200 rpm limiter.

Why on earth would you rev an engine without a load on it? Unless you are reving up to get a good luach there is NO reason to do this. It's not praticularly good for it. And yes there is a rev limiter that cuts in at a lower rpm when the car is in neutral. It's there for a good reason too.

I did because it was a rental and wanted to hear the exhaust on it.
4k came quick, and seemed quiet. The engine sounds nice under accel for a 6. needs dualies and a little more rumble!
Did get some one wheel peels outta it, and some fishtails in the rain. Nearly impossible to brake torque that bad dog on dry pavement with some wheel spin.
