Default Spark Plugs

I work with a guy who has been around building race engines for about 20 years lets say. He said that a way to get more spark out of the 05's would be to take the rap around plug and cut the metal at the bottom(forget what it is called) at 11:00 and 3:00. He said this is a way to produce more spark from are funky spark plugs because you now made two seperate contact places for spark. Thoughts?? I am also sure a tuning would be involved, but will it work?

Anyone have a pic of these plugs?

From your description it wont help a bit.
A spark will only jump one gap at a time, whichever has the path of least resistance at the moment, but it wont require a retune.

They are a "surface gap" plug and for a very good reason. Anyone noticed that this engine has 9.8 ti 1 compression and doesn't ping on regular gas? One of the things that causes detontation is sharp metal edges within the combustion chamber that get red hot and ignite the fuel prematurely. A conventional spark plug has sharp edges in several places. A surface gap plug does not. Surface gap plugs have been used in large industrial type engines for more than 50 years for this very reason. Tranditionally it takes the automotive industry a long time to adapt new technology. Disc brakes were developed for world war II fighter aircraft for landing on carrier decks and look how long it took detroit to use them!
Ford wised up and used a better spark plug.
DO NOT mess with your spark plugs!!! You WILL have problems!

Are they similar to these marine plugs used in some outboard motors?

It actually goes over top instead of around.

mrbmp... Yes they are very similar to that. The one disadvantage is that you can't really adjust the gap, but overall they are a better design. Yes lostsoul there is a special tool for this but I'm not sure where one would get it. Could try marine dealers or someone who manufacturs BIG engines like Walkesha. The first place I saw a surface gap plug was in a V10 industrial engine. The engine was driving a comprsssor in a refinery. It was about 30 feet long and had a cat walk between the cylinders in the V. Bore was about 3 feet stroke was 4 feet. It had a tag that said it developed 2000 hp at 250 rpm. Doesn't sound like much unitl you consider it did that 24 hours, 7 days a week. Redline was 350 rpm. It had a turbo charger that was the size of an entire Honda Civic. The exhaust was 2' diameter. I'll shut up now.
